Writer's picture: Krissa BurkeKrissa Burke

Preparing for your newborn photography session can feel like one more thing to check off a never-ending list, but at Vintage Magnolia Photography, we’re here to make it simple, easy, and stress-free. We’ve designed our process to ensure that both you and your baby feel relaxed, while we create beautiful, timeless images that you’ll cherish forever. Here’s your go-to guide for making the most of your newborn session with us.

1. Book Your Session Early Newborn photography is best done when your baby is between 5-12 days old, so it’s a good idea to pre-book your session while you’re still expecting. This ensures we have a spot reserved for you and that we can capture your newborn during the ideal time for those sleepy, snuggly poses. If you’re unsure of your baby’s arrival date, we can always adjust the timing once your little one is born.

2. Dress Comfortably and Choose Simple, Neutral Clothing When it comes to clothing for your newborn session, we recommend simple, neutral tones that complement the natural and organic style we aim for in our photos. Our client wardrobe is available for moms, newborns and toddlers, but if you prefer to bring your own outfits, think of light, neutral colors like soft whites, creams, and pastels. Avoid busy patterns or logos that can distract from the timeless beauty of your newborn.

3. Pack a Few Essentials for Baby While we provide all the props, wraps, and newborn clothing for your session, it’s helpful to bring a few of your baby’s essentials, like a pacifier, extra diapers, and wipes, though we do have all of these items on hand in case you forget! If you have a favorite blanket or something special you’d like to incorporate into the photos, feel free to bring that along as well. We’ll make sure to include it in a meaningful way if it fits with the session’s style.

4. Plan for Comfort During the Session Our studio is designed to be warm and cozy, creating a comfortable environment for your baby to sleep peacefully during the session. Newborn sessions typically last around 2-3 hours, so we suggest bringing a book, magazine, or even your favorite playlist to help you relax while we work with your baby. We want you to enjoy the experience as much as possible, so feel free to ask for anything that will make you more comfortable.

5. Don’t Worry About “Perfection” One of the biggest concerns we hear from parents is whether their baby will cooperate during the session. No worries, we’ve got everything under control. We know how to work with babies and have lots of experience in making them feel calm and comfortable. Working at your baby’s pace, and if there are moments when your little one needs a break or a snack, we’ll pause and take our time to ensure they’re content. The goal is to capture natural moments filled with love and connection — perfection is never the aim!

6. Relax and Enjoy the Process The most important thing to remember is that this is a special time in your life, and you’re making memories that will last forever. Relax and enjoy the process. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the session goes and how beautiful the photos turn out. Trust us to handle all the details while you focus on creating lasting memories with your newborn.

At Vintage Magnolia Photography, we’re committed to making your newborn session as smooth, stress-free, and enjoyable as possible. By following these simple steps, along with the client guide you will receive,

you’ll be ready for a photography experience that’s as effortless as it is beautiful. We can’t wait to capture the love and joy of your growing family!
